THE FINAL WORD ON Q.

I know, I know…you’re all sick of the BBQ topic. But this, I promise, is the last beating of that dead horse—until 2006, at least.

Expatica Spain published my essay entitled “My Quixotic Quest for Q” last week. It’s kind of a synopsis of all the BBQ-related rants that you, my dear readers, have so patiently tolerated during the past three months.

Check it out by clicking here.

BTW…what’s the significance of 2006? Heh, heh, heh…I’ll let you know in two and a half months.

  1. Hey sal,
have you considered buying a scrap oil drum and making your own smoker? you can build a cold or hot smoker pretty easily ( have friends who’ve done both) and there’s something extremely rewarding about smoking meat in something you’ve put together by hand. (Having a friend with a cutting torch is handy but not required)

I agree Sal…I think it’s time to go to your local welding shop and allow them to laugh at the crazy Americano and his project. Hell…there could be a continuing blog-saga in this… perhaps even a mini-series… One man’s quest for Q in a hostile land.
I might have to talk to my next door neighbor who is the plant manager of a major BBQ manufacturer (Char-broil) and see if the have any pro-bono, humanitarian relief department that could ship a smoker to Spain.

Sorry for the deleted post…had to edit.correct typo)

  3. Hi everyone:

Sorry for the delay in responding, but work interfered with the blogging this week. So…

CuFoo: Yes indeed. A Christmas gift to myself. Details below.

Harsh and Iron Man: I have, in fact, been looking into the oil drum smoker idea for the past month. I’ve downloaded plans and photos. I’ve chatted on various BBQ-specific Internet forums with Q`rs who have fabricated their own oil drum smokers. I drew-up a diagram for the model that I wanted to build. I even made inquiries with a local restaurant concerning olive oil suppliers from whom I could buy an empty drum.

And then it hit me. Am I crazy?! Didn’t I learn my lesson with those flower pots?! Haven’t I wasted enough time and money trying to get myself a smoker on the cheap?!

    Yes, yes and yes.

So…I went to Amazon.com and bought a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. It arrived at my parents house this morning. Later in the year, I’ll bring it back to Spain on Iberia Airlines.

And that, my friends, is what I should’ve done in the first place.

A wise man once said, “The cheapskate always pays twice.”

    And so I did.

    Sal

PS: You’re all invited to my house for a barbeque in 2006. Please RSVP no later than April 30.
